Microsoft to buy Nokia’s mobile phone business for $7.2 billion
உலகின் முன்னணி செல்போன் தயாரிப்பு நிறுவனமான நோக்கியாவை மைக்ரோசாப்ட் நிறுவனம் ரூ. 43,000 கோடிக்கு வாங்கவுள்ளது. செல்போன் விற்பனையில் உலகில் முதலிடத்தில் இருந்த நோக்கியாவை சாம்சங் போன்ற நிறுவனங்கள் பின் தள்ளிவிட்டன. மிக வேகமாக மாறிவரும் தொழில்நுட்பத்துக்கு இணையாக நோக்கியா தன்னை மாற்றிக் கொள்ளாததால் சாம்சங், சோனி, ஆப்பிள் போன்ற சர்வதேச நிறுவனங்களும், மைக்ரோமேக்ஸ் போன்ற உள்நாட்டு நிறுவனங்களும் நோக்கியாவின் சந்தையை ஆக்கிரமித்துவிட்டன. குறிப்பாக ஸ்மார்ட்போன் சந்தையில் நோக்கியா மிகவும் பின்தங்கிவிட்டது. ஆண்ட்ராய்ட் மொபைல் போன்களை சமாளிக்க 2011ம் ஆண்டில் மைக்ரோசாப்ட் நிறுவனத்தின் விண்டோ போன் சாப்ட்வேரை நோக்கியா தனது செல்போன்களில் புகுத்தியது. இது ஓரளவுக்கு நோக்கியாவுக்கு உதவினாலும், பெரிய அளவில் விற்பனையை அதிகரிக்க இந்தத் திட்டம் உதவவில்லை. இந் நிலையில் கடும் நெருக்கடியில் உள்ள நோக்கியாவை வாங்க மைக்ரோசாப்ட் முடிவு செய்துள்ளது. ஆப்பிள் போன்ற சாப்ட்வேர் பின்னணியைக் கொண்ட நிறுவனங்களே நேரடியாக போன்களைத் தயாரித்து வெற்றி கண்டதையடுத்து, அதே வேலையில் கூகுள் நிறுவனமும் இறங்கியுள்ளது. விரைவிலேயே கூகுள் போன்கள் உலகளவில் வலம் வரவுள்ளன. இந் நிலையில் அதே ரூட்டில் பயணிக்க முடிவு செய்துள்ள மைக்ரோசாப்ட் இதன் முதல் படியாக உலகின் மாபெரும் செல்போன் நிறுவனமான நோக்கியாவை வாங்க முடிவு செய்துள்ளது. மேலும் நோக்கியா நிறுவனத்தின் தலைமை செயல் இயக்குனரான ஸ்டீபன் எலோப் மீண்டும் மைக்ரோசாப்டிலேயே இணைவார் என்றும் தெரிகிறது. இவர் மைக்ரோசாப்டில் இருந்து தான் நோக்கியாவுக்குச் சென்றார் என்பது குறிப்பிடத்தக்கது. மைக்ரோசாப்ட்டின் இப்போதைய தலைவரான பால்மர் விரைவில் பதவி விலக உள்ள நிலையில், ஸ்டீபன் எலோப் மைக்ரோசாப்ட்டின் தலைவாரகவும் வாய்ப்புள்ளதாகத் தெரிகிறது
Microsoft to buy Nokia’s mobile phone business for $7.2 billion
This just in, Microsoft has announced that they will be acquiring most of Nokia’s business for $7.2 billion dollars. Microsoft will be acquiring Nokia’s Devices and Services business, which includes the company’s Mobile Phones and Smart Devices business units. Not only that, Microsoft will now license Nokia’s patents and license and use Nokia’s mapping services.
Microsoft will pay Nokia a total of EUR 3.79 billion to purchase Nokia’s Devices & Services business and EUR 1.65 billion to license Nokia’s patents, for a total acquisition price of EUR 5.44 billion in cash, or $7.2 billion US dollars.
“Under the terms of the agreement, Microsoft will acquire substantially all of Nokia’s Devices and Services business, including the Mobile Phones and Smart Devices business units as well as an industry-leading design team, operations including all Nokia Devices & Services-related production facilities, Devices & Services-related sales and marketing activities, and related support functions,” Microsoft stated in a press release.
“At closing, approximately 32,000 people are expected to transfer to Microsoft, including 4,700 people in Finland and 18,300 employees directly involved in manufacturing, assembly and packaging of products worldwide. The operations that are planned to be transferred to Microsoft generated an estimated EUR 14.9 billion, or almost 50 percent of Nokia’s net sales for the full year 2012,” Microsoft added.
Thanks to this acquisition, Microsoft will also own the Lumia smartphone brand. The Lumia smartphone brand currently runs Microsoft’s Windows Phone 8 and has allowed Microsoft’s mobile platform to achieve a boost in market share. Microsoft will also be entering into a few licensing agreements, especially with Qualcomm.
Microsoft will enter into a 10 year licensing agreement with Nokia for its patents. The devices and services giant will also become a “strategic licensee” of the HERE platform and will separately pay Nokia for a four-year license.
“Microsoft will acquire the Asha brand and will license the Nokia brand for use with current Nokia mobile phone products. Nokia will continue to own and manage the Nokia brand. This element provides Microsoft with the opportunity to extend its service offerings to a far wider group around the world while allowing Nokia’s mobile phones to serve as an on-ramp to Windows Phone,” Microsoft added.
Once the acquisition goes through, several Nokia executives will transfer to Microsoft. These executives include CEO Stephen Elop, Jo Harlow, Juha Putkiranta, Timo Toikkanen, and Chris Weber. Microsoft will use a new center in Finland to serve Microsoft consumers in Europe.
