Earthquake off Odisha sparks tremors, panic in Chennai
வங்கக்கடலில் ஏற்பட்ட நிலநடுக்கத்தால் வடமாநிலங்கள் மற்றும் சென்னையில் பல இடங்களில் பூமி அதிர்ந்தது. ஒடிஷா மாநிலத்தில் உள்ள பாராதீப் துறைமுகத்தில் இருந்து 60 கிமீ தொலைவில் வங்கக் கடலில் 10 கிமீ ஆழத்தில் புதன்கிழமை இரவு 9.51 மணிக்கு நிலநடுக்கம் ஏற்பட்டது. இது ரிக்டர் அளவுகோலில் 6 ஆக பதிவாகி இருந்தது. இந்த நிலநடுக்கத்தால் கிழக்கு, வட இந்தியா மற்றும் சென்னையில் சில இடங்களில் அதிர்வு உணரப்பட்டது. ஒடிஷா, ஆந்திரா, தமிழ்நாடு, மேற்கு வங்கம், ஜார்கண்ட் மற்றும் மத்திய பிரதேசத்தில் நில அதிர்வு உணரப்பட்டது. மேலும் உத்தர பிரதேசத்திலும் லேசான நில அதிர்வு ஏற்பட்டது. சென்னையில் அடையாறு, போரூர், திருவல்லிக்கேணி, தி. நகர், கோடம்பாக்கம், நுங்கம்பாக்கம் உள்ளிட்ட இடங்களில் நில அதிர்வு ஏற்பட்டது. இதனால் பீதி அடைந்த மக்கள் வீடுகளை விட்டு வெளியேறி தெருக்களுக்கு ஓடி வந்தனர். ஆயிரம் விளக்கு காவல் குடியிருப்பு கட்டிடம் லேசாக குலுங்கியது. மேலும் சென்னை ஸ்டான்லி மகப்பேறு மருத்துவமனையின் 8 மாடி கட்டிடத்தில் 5 மற்றும் 6வது மாடியில் இருந்த நோயாளிகள் நிலநடுக்கத்தை உணர்ந்து வெளியே வந்துவிட்டனர். அவர்களைத் தொடர்ந்து கட்டிடத்தில் இருந்த அனைத்து நோயாளிகளும் வெளியே வந்தனர். மெரினா கடற்கரை மணலில் தினமும் பொதுமக்கள் தூங்குவது வழக்கம். நிலநடுக்கத்தால் சுனாமி ஏற்படுமோ என்ற பயத்தால் கடற்கரை மணலில் தூங்கியவர்களை அவர்களது உறவினர்கள் வந்து எழுப்பி அழைத்துச் சென்றனர்.

An earthquake measuring 6.0 on the Richter Scale hit the northern Bay of Bengal on Wednesday night, causing tremors to be felt in a number of cities on the Indian mainland. The epicentre of the quake was located about 275 km southeast of Konark in Odisha, at a depth of 39 km below the surface. The quake did not seem to have featured any vertical shift in the landmass, which is a critical factor in causing tsunamis. The quake did not occur along a fault line. This meant that a tsunami alert was not raised along the eastern coast, despite the quake occurring in the neighbourhood. The quake occurred around 9:51 pm IST, according to data from the geological event alerts from the United States Geological Service (USGS). Residents of some parts of Chennai were out on the streets after feeling the tremors. However, such incidents were few and far between, and no aftershocks were reported. “The earthquake has been confirmed but there is no Tsunami alert. The effect in Chennai is minor. It occurred around 9.51pm IST. Though initially it was reported at 6.2 on the Richter Scale the latest bulletin has bought it down to 5.8,” said the Deputy Director of RMC Chennai, S B Thambi. Social media networking websites were buzzing with news of the tremors coming in from cities across the Indian mainland, such as Thoothukudi and Chennai, to Hyderabad, Bhubaneshwar, Kolkata and Delhi. Reports about the tremors surfaced from various parts of the city, including from Nungambakkam, Adyar, Kilpuak and Royapettah. “I was sitting on my bed around 9.45 pm when I heard the spoons falling down in the kitchen. Even some of the windows were banging,” said Gayathri Puranik, a medical coder from Kilpauk. Information was yet to emerge when this article was filed, over the tremors had caused material damage of any nature.
