Andaman boat tragedy: Survivors narrate their ordeal at sea
அந்தமான் தலைநகர் போர்ட் பிளேயர் அருகே சுற்றுலா பயணிகளை ஏற்றி சென்ற படகு ஒன்று கடலில் மூழ்கியது. இந்த துயர சம்பவத்தில் பலியானோர் எண்ணிக்கை 31 என்று தெரிகிறது. காஞ்சிபுரத்தைச் சேர்ந்தவர்கள் பலர் இதில் பலியாகியுள்ளனர். தலைநகர் போர்ட்ப்ளேர் அருகே நடுக்கடலில் இந்தப் படகு சென்று கொண்டிருந்தது. அப்போது திடீரென்று படகு தள்ளாடியது. கண் இமைக்கும் நேரத்தில் படகு கடலில் கவிழ்ந்த போது மரண ஓலங்கள் எழுந்தன. கடற்கரையிலிருந்து சற்று தொலைவில் இந்த விபத்து ஏற்பட்டதால் மீட்புப் பணி மேற்கொள்ளப்பட்டது.கடலில் படகு முழ்கியதில் 31 பேர் பலியாகினர் என்று தகவல்கள் தெரிவித்துள்ளன. படகில் 46 சுற்றுலா பயணிகள் சென்றுள்ளனர் என்றும் அந்த தகவல் தெரிவித்துள்ளது. படகில் இருந்தவர்கள் தமிழகத்தின் காஞ்சிபுரத்தை சேர்ந்தவர்கள் என்று அங்கிருந்து வரும் தகவல்கள் தெரிவித்துள்ளன.இது வரையில் 13 பேர் காப்பாற்றப்பட்டுள்ளனர் என்றும் தெரிவிக்கப்பட்டுள்ளது. அவர்கள் மருத்துவமனையில் அனுமதிக்கப்பட்டுள்ளனர். அவர்களில் இரண்டு பேரது நிலை மோசமாக இருப்பதாக அங்கிருந்து வரும் தகவல்கள் தெரிவித்துள்ளன. தொடர்ந்து அங்கு மீட்பு பணிகள் நடைபெற்று வருவதாகவும் தகவல்கள் தெரிவித்துள்ளன. சுற்றுலா பயணிகளை ஏற்றி சென்ற படகு மாலை 3.45 மணிக்கு மேல் மூழ்கியது என்று தனியார் தொலைக்காட்சி தகவல்கள் தெரிவித்துள்ளது. அங்கிருந்து முழுமையான தகவல்கள் தெரியவரவில்லை. 35 பேர் செல்லக்கூடிய படகில் அதிகமான ஆட்களை ஏற்றியதால் விபத்து நடந்ததாகவும், படகில் உயிர் காக்கும் சாதனம் எதுவும் இல்லை என்றும் அங்கிருந்து வரும் தகவல்கள் தெரிவித்துள்ளன. இது தொடர்பாக பேசிய பிரதமர் மன்மோகன்சிங், கடலில் மாயமானவர்களை மீட்க உடனடியாக நடவடிக்கை எடுக்க அதிகாரிகளுக்கு உத்தரவிட்டுள்ளதாகவும். படகு கவிழ்ந்ததில் மக்கள் பலியான தகவல்கள் பெரும் அதிர்ச்சியை ஏற்படுத்தி உள்ளதாக தெரிவித்துள்ளார்.

For G Preethy, a survivor of the boat tragedy in the Andamans, it was the worst ten minutes of her life. “The boat was obviously overloaded. As the water seeped in, the boat started sinking from the back. In less than ten minutes, the boat had sunk,” she told TOI from the islands. Preethy had gone with her husband Kumara Guru and her in-laws, Suseela and Ranganathan. Suseela died in the accident. “Some 12 of us held on to a raft for help to arrive. As time went by, many for tired holding the rope and let go. At the end of one and a half hours, only five of us were still holding on to the rope,” said Preethy. A beacon of hope arrived in the form of another tour boat that was crossing us. “They threw a few life jackets at us. Only some five or six could get the life jacket. Since that boat was already full, they could take only three people,” she said. “Several water scooters went past us, but none stopped to help. Final help came after one and half hours of waiting in the water,” she added. The boat left North Bay islands at 1pm and reached Rock island. The boat carried more than 50 people and 32 of them were from Kancheepuram in Tamil Nadu. “Tragedy struck some 20 minutes after we left this island at around 3pm,” said Preethy. Chandrusha from Kancheepuram reached Port Blair on Monday morning to meet his sister-in-law, Nithyabai. She and her three-year-old old daughter were the only ones who survived of the family of six who had gone for the tour. “Nithya is too traumatized to talk but is fine. The child is sick because of drinking the sea water,” said Chandru from Andamans. The body of Suresh, husband of Nithyabhai, was found only this morning. “We were told to wait for the postmortem,” said Chandru.
