Vaccine Clears HIV-Like Virus In Monkeys
A major breakthrough in finding the cure for HIV has been reported by researchers of Oregon Health and Science University (OHSU) as they have created a vaccine that eliminates the virus that causes AIDS in some monkeys. The next step after this is to test the vaccine on humans. Dr. Louis Picker, associate director of the Oregon Health and Science University Vaccine and Gene Therapy Institute, said in a press release that “To date, HIV infection has only been cured in a very small number of highly-publicized but unusual clinical cases in which HIV-infected individuals were treated with anti-viral medicines very early after the onset of infection or received a stem cell transplant to combat cancer. This latest research suggests that certain immune responses elicited by a new vaccine may also have the ability to completely remove HIV from the body.” immunodeficiency virus (SIV) responded to the vaccine. SIV is similar to HIV but is 100 times more lethal. Louis Picker, of the Vaccine and Gene Therapy Institute at OHSU said that “It’s always tough to claim eradication — there could always be a cell which we didn’t analyze that has the virus in it. But for the most part, with very stringent criteria … there was no virus left in the body of these monkeys.” The vaccine used in the research was created by using a modified version of a common and harmless virus called cytomegalovirus (CMV). When the CMV was exposed to SIV it prompted the monkey’s white blood cells to attack the SIV. The monkeys who have responded positively to the vaccine have been SIV free for three years now. Researchers are now studying why the vaccine did not respond to the other monkeys however they are hopeful that the process could also work on humans.
