Registrar of Societies postpones Nadigar Sangam 2019 elections

The Nadigar Sangam elections that were set to happen this Friday has been postponed without mentioning the date by the Registrar of Societies on Wednesday afternoon. This news, however, seems to have come as a surprise to both parties – Nassar-Vishal’s Pandavar Ani as well as Bhagyaraj-Iswari Ganesan’s Shankaradas Ani.

A statement from the Registrar states that based on a complaint from 61 members on June 6, the Registrar has decided to peruse the matter further and decide when the elections will be held. The 61 members had complained that they were removed from the voters’ list by Pandavar Ani to skew the election results in their favour. These members demanded to know why they were removed from the Sangam.

In the response letter to the Registrar dated June 17, Vishal has stated that of the 61, 44 members have been changed to amateur artists, 4 of them have been removed based on disciplinary action and 13 are eligible to vote in this elections. The letter also states that the members did not submit any details when the Sangam was preparing a list for its “Data Base”. He concludes by saying, “We will follow your orders based on your deduction of the investigations conducted with them.”

Earlier on Wednesday, Vishal, Karunas and Poochi Murugan met the Tamil Nadu governor and submitted a petition underlining the problem they face in conducting the elections. “We wanted protection in conducting fair elections and we’ve submitted our petition to the Governor,” said Vishal to reporters.

When TNM reached out to Nassar, Pandavar Ani’s leader, he said, “We will be taking the next legal step.” While Nassar agreed that the final list was approved by the Registrar, he, however, refused to answer when the list was submitted. “It was all done legally,” he insists.

The Registrar further observes that any election related decision taken by Nassar and his team of office bearers cannot hold since their term ended in April. “Based on the agreement made during the 65th General Body Meeting, the present team’s extended period ended by April 2019. The notification for election has come after this extended period and hence this decision needs to be reviewed. Until then the election campaigns and other related activities will have to be stopped,” reads the rest of the notice.

Meanwhile, Pandavar Ani’s Poochi Murugan has said, “Justice Padmanabhan is the one conducting this election. We’ve submitted the right list as per Societies Act. This is a motivated move.”
