International Boxing Association suspended pugilist Laishram Sarita Devi

அண்மையில் நடந்து முடிந்த 2014-ம் ஆண்டுக்கான ஆசிய விளையாட்டு குத்துச்சண்டைப் போட்டியின் அரை இறுதி போட்டியில் குத்துச்சண்டை வீராங்கனை சரிதா தேவி சிறப்பாக விளையாடிய போதும் தோல்வியுற்றதாக அறிவிக்கப்பெற்றார். இதனால் வீராங்கனை சரிதா தேவி கடும் அதிருப்தி அடைந்து தனக்கு வழங்கப்பட்ட வெண்கலப் பதக்கத்தையும் பெற மறுத்தத்தோடு மட்டுமல்லாமல் தனக்கு வழங்கப்பட்ட வெண்கலப் பதக்கத்தை தன்னை வென்ற தென் கொரியா வீராங்கனைக்கு அணிவித்த சம்பவம் பெரும் பரபரப்பை ஏற்படுத்தியது. எனினும், வெண்கலப்பதக்கம் சரிதா தேவியிடமே ஒப்படைக்கப்பட்டது.

The International Boxing Association or AIBA on Wednesday suspended pugilist Laishram Sarita Devi and two others for protesting against the controversial loss to a South Korean competitor at the Incheon Asian Games earlier this month.
The AIBA Executive Committee Bureau in a statement said it has provisionally suspended Indian women pugilist Laishram Sarita Devi, her coaches Gurbakhsh Singh Sandhu, Blas Iglesias Fernandez and Sagar Mal Dhayal, as well as India’s chef-de-mission to the Incheon Asian Games Adille J. Sumariwalla.

In a statement on Tuesday, AIBA said: “This case has been sent for review by the AIBA Disciplinary Commission, and it means that Laisham Sarita Devi, the above mentioned coaches as well as Adille Sumariwalla will not be allowed to participate in the AIBA Women’s World Boxing Championships, Jeju 2014.”

Refusing to wear the bronze medal around her neck, Sarita had tearfully accepted the medal in her hand and then gave it to silver medalist Ji Na Park of host South Korea, amid loud boos by the Indians present at the ceremony at Incheon.

Sarita was declared the loser after her semifinal bout against Park despite dominating the bout. The Indian team had lodged a protest against the decision, which was rejected by the International Boxing Association. The controversy took place in the third round as the Indian battered Park with her punches but Judges B and C awarded the round 10-9 in favour of the host fighter while Judge A gave the round 10-9 to Sarita. The 32-year-old boxer, who won the silver at the Commonwealth Games earlier this year, later told reporters that she would continue to compete as she wants to set an example for future boxers.

Other Reports also said the Indian boxer had to borrow money from a journalist to lodge her protest against the decision since officials from the Indian Olympic Association chose not to involve themselves in Sarita’s case.
