‘Miracle’ Woman Ruby Graupera-Cassimiro Survives After 45 Minutes Without Pulse

A mum who lost pulse for 45 minutes during a routine Caesarean section came ‘back to life’ just hours after doctors were ready to record her time of death. More than a dozen doctors and nurses worked desperately to revive 40-year-old Ruby Graupera-Cassimiro but lost hope after 45 minutes with no pulse. The Florida woman’s heart had given out without warning during a routine Caesarean section, the Sun Sentinel reported.

Ruby’s husband, mum and sister all said their goodbyes to her a matter of hours after they had welcomed the baby girl she had given birth to. Medical staff had stopped lifesaving procedures and were ready to record an official time of death when they cast a final glance towards a heart monitor. But then something miraculous happened – the blip of a heartbeat appeared on the screen. A few hours later, Ruby, a human resources manager and mum-of-two, was pulling at her breathing tube and writing notes to her family at Boca Raton Regional Hospital.

Dr Anthony Dardano, president of the hospital’s medical staff, said: “There’s very few things in medicine that I’ve seen, working in the trauma centre myself and doing all the things that I do, that really were either unexplainable or miraculous. “And when I heard this story, that was the first thing that came to my mind.” Ruby made a complete recovery and was taken off the life-support machine the day after her near-death experience. Doctors said the terrifying ordeal was caused by an amniotic fluid embolism, a rare, serious condition when fluid surrounding a a foetus in the womb enters a mother’s bloodstream and heart, clogging it. Anesthesiologist Dr Anthony Salvadore said the decision to tell Ruby’s family she was on her death bed wasn’t taken lightly.

He said: “Once we say that’s it, that’s it.” Ruby suffered no complications from the procedures, which could have included reduced brain function from the loss of circulation, seacostonline.com reported. Within days of her struggle, Ruby and her baby were allowed home.
