India captain MS Dhoni had reportedly offered to quit as captain of Chennai Super Kings, media reports said, apparently livid with his name being dragged into the spot fixing controversy that had hit the Indian Premier League last year. Dhoni is currently leading India in Bangladesh, where they have made it to the semi-finals of the T20 WC, but the usually cool headed captain was learned to have been very disappointed and annoyed that his name has been sullied. The wicketkeeper batsman, according to the Times of India, spoke to N Srinivasan over the phone on Friday about his offer of dual resignation as Chennai captain and India Cements VP – neither of which has been accepted yet but the newspaper quoted a source as saying that there could be a development soon. Harish Salve, lawyer for the Cricket Association of Bihar, had accused Dhoni of giving a false statement to the Mukul Mudgal committee as the Supreme Court heard the BCCI’s response on Thursday. Salve, a prominent lawyer in India, said Dhoni, who leads Chennai Super Kings and is also an employee of India Cements, which owns Super Kings, was in a clear case of conflict of interest. Dhoni had reportedly told the Mudgal committee that Meiyappan had nothing to do with the Chennai team but it was later established by the Supreme Court appointed probe panel that Meiyappan had indeed held a senior position in the franchisee and had indulged in betting on his own team. However, the BCCI came out in strong defence of the national captain on Friday.
