103 year old man gets hip replaced

When 103-year-old MB Manikyam dislocated his left hip joint after a fall while shooing away a dog at his son’s house at Ghatkesar three weeks ago, his family lost all hope of his survival. In excruciating pain, Manikyam was rushed to a hospital where he was found to have fractured his hip. However, Manikyam has probably become the first centenarian to undergo a hip replacement surgery in Andhra Pradesh, doctors said. Dr Mithin Achi, who performed the surgery at Apollo Hospital, Secunderabad, said that he and his colleagues had performed many hip replacements on elderly people but never before on a centenarian. Even giving anesthesia to a 103-year-old patient is risky. But doctors went ahead as otherwise there was a threat to his life. as failing to repair a hip fracture would not only put him in a wheelchair but could lead to complications resulting in death. Born in 1910 and a native of Zaheerabad, Manikyam, who was a pastor, has nine children, 57 grandchildren and 20 great grandchildren. He had his first hip replacement surgery around 20 years ago after he fell off his cycle while participating in a race with some youngsters at Zaheerabad. “Cycling and wrestling were his passions,” said his son Nirmal Kumar, a BHEL employee, while a fragile, wheelchair-bound Manikyam listened during a press conference on Wednesday. Of late, due to old age, Manikyam hardly talks but when he does, he does it animatedly. “I took part in the vaccination drive in the plague-affected villages in the Karnataka region in the pre-independent India,” he randomly recalled. “A missionary doctor from the US trained him in a lot of things including medicine and tailoring. He also became a pastor,” added Nirmal Kumar. For most part of his life, he lived on home-grown vegetables and jowar rotis and has all his teeth intact even now. The centenarian doesn’t have any major health complications except mild hypertension and a blurred vision. With time, his condition will improve, Dr Achi said.
