A morbidly obese Saudi man, weighing 610 kilograms (1,344 pounds), has been forklifted to a hospital in the capital Riyadh for medical treatment to reduce his weight. Khaled Mohsin Shairi was flown on Monday from his apartment in the southwestern Saudi city of Jizan to King Fahd Medical City (KFMC) on a specially-equipped plane. Shairi, in his twenties, was transferred to the hospital at the expense of Saudi King Abdullah. Saudi Arabia’s health ministry had to acquire a specially-made bed and a crane to transfer Shairi from his second-floor apartment, Saudi media said. The bed was specially made for Shairi in the United States, according to the media reports. According to the UN, Kuwait has the highest proportion of obese adults in the Middle East, with 42.8 percent of its population considered severely overweight, followed by Saudi Arabia with 35.2 percent.
